What is your name, where are you from?

Maite Quinlan, originally from Spain but now proud to be putting roots down in Macroom, County Cork, Ireland.

What do you like most about Macroom?

Macroom is an idyllic market town blessed with incredible scenery. It has a real sense of community. Keeping local traditions alive, even in a town center where some ruins of historic Macroom Castle lie, it reminds me of days gone by.

What’s your backstory?

An idea so simple, yet very close to Quinlan's Gift Shop-that it is to bring the finest Irish craftsmanship, thoughtfulness in gifting, and sustainable giving all together under one store.

My husband James and I wanted this store to mean a story in every piece-from a knitted throw to Irish pottery pieces to all beautiful accessories. We had the passion to market artisans and showcase their craft, so we built the business on the view of the Irish-made gifts.

What are your income streams?

Online store and physical store in Macroom.

How have you grown the business?

Strong relationship building with customers, local artisans, and other small business owners. Social media has been huge for helping connect us beyond our immediate geography.

And we pride ourselves on great service, the word of mouth for this is priceless. But most importantly, by staying true to our core values, delivering great, sustainable, meaningful gifts that people absolutely love.

What is your favorite product?

I love the McNutt of Donegal throws. Beautifully woven, incredibly soft, and with such attention to detail. I imagine cozy evenings, wrapped up with a cup of tea.

If you could go back, would you do anything differently?

I would probably try to worry less about the little things! When you start a business, you want things to be perfect but have come to learn that lessons are learned through trial and error.

What are your goals?

Increase the range of sustainable Irish products we offer, and grow online. I'd like to see Quinlan's become a household name for thoughtful, ethical, and beautifully crafted gifts.
